Photodynamic Therapy

Age & liver spots, UV damage, irregular pigmentation and persistent acne can be improved with photodynamic therapy. This is the latest development in skin rejuvenation to improve the appearance of skin. Originally studied as a non-surgical solution to skin cancers, researchers found the study recipients exhibited dramatic improvements in complexion and skin tone. It is performed by applying a specifically compounded chemical onto the skin which is attracted into rapidly reproducing or highly active cells. Then light is applied to the skin, activating the chemical which alters the targeted cell. The results are: increased evenness of skin color, decreased pore size, decreased sebaceous oils production.

Helpful For:

Improving various skin concerns associated with prolonged sun exposure.

  • Age spots.
  • Liver spots.
  • UV damage.
  • Irregular pigmentation.
  • Overall skin rejuvenation.

Benefits:

Photodynamic therapy is a simple and effective solution to improve the visible signs of aging on the face, hands, neck, and décolletage (chest). A topical application of aminolevulinic acid is applied to the skin and activated with an intense pulsed light device. The treatment clears age spots caused by sun damage, and clears up acne breakouts.

What to Expect:

  • A VISIA Skinscan analysis and consultation with a Skin Specialist to determine if photodynamic therapy is right for you.
  • Depending on individual goals and the condition of your skin, a pre-treatment plan may be needed to prepare the skin.
  • A chemical solution is applied to the skin and allowed to incubate before and intense pulsed light procedure activates the booster.
  • Results may be seen after the first application, but typically a series of 2-3 treatments procedures is necessary to achieve an optimal result.
  • Skin rejuvenation results are lasting, but are affected by future UV damage.
  • Meticulous pre and post care instruction will be reviewed.
  • Treatments may be repeated.
  • Minimal downtime.

Things to Consider:

  • A stinging sensation may be present during the incubation and activation period.
  • Redness resembling a sunburn, swelling and peeling are to be expected post treatment. These are temporary conditions that usually resolve in 3 to 10 days.
  • You must stay completely away from light and heat sources for 72 hours after activation of aminolevulinic acid. Including time in an automobile and under fluorescent lights.
  • You must have someone to drive you home after the treatment and be prepared to cover the treatment area while in and automobile or other area that would expose you to light and/or heat.
  • Sun block is a must due to increased sun sensitivity.
